New Objective Webinar: PicoChip® – Alzheimer’s Disease Biomarkers

October 10th, 2024 – Littleton, MA (USA) New Objective hosted a webinar event on Wednesday September 25th focused on the use of PicoChip® columns for Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers research. The webinar hosted by Emily Ehrenfeld, President, New Objective and led by Helena Svobodova, Product Manager and Steve Klohr, Director of Business Development, New Objective, featured Justyna Zakaria at Northwestern University who shared her recent research on “Final Study Results of Human Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) Processing in Alzheimer’s disease: towards a physiological model.”

Justyna presented her continued work on the development of sAPPβ and sAPPα as biomarkers of BACE1 activity and their implications for differentiation of Alzheimer’s Disease subgroups. Mass spectrometry and nanobore chromatography using PicoChip have been key tools in Justyna’s laboratory for the quantitative analysis of human sAPPβ and Aβ in CSF samples. The ability to measure these biomarkers is aiding in the understanding of the heterogeneity of Alzheimer’s disease and may enable clinicians in the future to answer critical questions inclusive of who gets what treatment and how much to be effective without significant side effects.

Using the platform developed and established method using PicoChip, the data Justyna and her team have been able to generate has brought a greater understanding of sAPPβ production and clearance rates relative to sAPPα and how these correlates to amyloid status. This data supports the development of a physiological model of APP processing. Justyna is currently finalizing the results for two publications.

Justyna continues her work in this field of study as she begins the process to translate the established method from CSF samples to blood plasma samples. Her recent work with PicoChip, featuring a higher performance separation and integrated heating using the New Objective Universal Flow Station, is showing exciting results. Justyna is eager to integrate these additional New Objective Solutions into her workflows and expanded research in this important field of biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease.
